Family Picture Identification Project |
Current Size: 50GB |
Thank you for taking part in the Dalton/Kalicicki/Lengel/Prange/Toth/LaMarche/etc family picture identification project. The bulk of these photos come from the albums and walls of June Lengel (starting with 00150).
This project will take quite some time - there are thousands of photographs in all. I am digitizing them at 1200DPI and will make them available to family* as original scans, Photoshopped original-resolution, Photoshopped reduced resolution (300DPI) and untouched reduced resolution. Initially, these will just be untouched, but if there is one you are particularly interested in, please let me know & I'll bump it to the front of the line in getting it cleaned up for you.

NOTICE: All of the online galleries have been replaced. The web versions are now higher resolution and contain watermarks with the numbers (to aid in identification).
How to help:
Click a link above to view a gallery. Each picture is assigned a serial number, starting with 00001. The prefix/suffix (if any) is not of consequence for identification purposes (they are to aid me in organizing and tracking).
If you recognize someone (or even better, the scene / situation) in one of the photos, send me an email with the 5-digit number (or update the spreadsheet at bottom of gallery) and whatever you can tell me about the picture. If you have a story, I can set up a way to record a phone call and you can give it verbally if you like (text is great, but stories in the voice of the person that knows the story are even better).
About my process:
Everything is being scanned at 1200DPI on a 4800DPI (optical) scanner. Aside from keeping the scanner & prints as clean as possible, no tweaking of any kind (dust removal, sharpening, etc) is being performed on the fronts of these photographs. The backs have had the levels tweaked to enhance contrast to make identifying marks easier to read. I only scan the backs when there is something there to look at (more than just what paper was used - eventually I stopped scanning backs for just a date, instead I logged the dates of these on the spreadsheet). The originals have been reduced to 120DPI for the web & 300DPI to download. (Some of) the web versions have had sharpening applied but the 300DPI have not. All versions are minimally compressed .JPG files, so nothing exotic is needed to view them.
When I get around to cleaning these up in Photoshop (cropping, dust removal, levels, colour correction, repairing, etc), I will be doing so in the original scanned resolution. Typically, there is no more than 600DPI of information in a photographic print (often much less), so I intend to reduce them to 600DPI and share these on the downloads page (linked below).
I am happy to share anything and everything. These should all fit on a large flashdrive / small harddrive, so just let me know what you want. I may be able to burn them to DVDr, but it will may take a lot of them if you want everything.
Request:
I would love to acquire more photographs (especially those that are identifiable!); please let me know if you already have digitals or if you would like me to scan prints for you. At the moment, there is quite a queue, but I am prioritizing by persons I do not already have pictures of, so if yours fit that category, they may get in early.
